On December 4, 2013 at 1:30 P.M., the Washington County Commissioners joined Federal, State, and local officials for a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the $2.3 million Century Plaza Apartments for the Elderly Expansion Project.
The project involves the construction of 14 new apartment units that will be connected to the existing 65 unit Century Plaza Apartments facility which is located at 1880 West Chestnut Street in North Franklin Township.
In 1993, the Redevelopment Authority purchased the former dilapidated Century Plaza Motel out of Federal Bankruptcy Court and transformed the former 100 unit motel into a 65 unit apartment building.
Century Plaza Apartments opened on September 1, 1994 and was fully occupied within three months. Over the past 19 years, the facility has been 100% occupied with a substantial waiting list. In response to that demand, the Redevelopment Authority has planned this expansion project.
Funding for the expansion project is being provided through the Washington County HOME Investment Partnerships Program and the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement (PHARE) Program. PHARE funds are generated from the impact fees that are collected from the Marcellus shale industry. Both programs are administered by the Redevelopment Authority on behalf of the County Commissioners.
Each of the 14 apartments will have one bedroom and will include a combination living room/dining room, a fully accessible bathroom, and a kitchen equipped with an electric range and refrigerator. Each apartment will be individually heated and air conditioned. In addition, each apartment will contain smoke detectors, sprinklers for fire protection, and an intercom system connected to the front entrance doors. Also, a new two-story corridor will connect the new addition to the existing facility in order for the residents to have access to all common area spaces such as the TV room, community room, and supportive services.
Residents of Century Plaza Apartments must be 62 years of age or older and have incomes not exceeding $27,360 for an individual and $31,260 for two persons.
Construction is expected to be completed by June 2014. Anyone interested in applying for residency at Century Plaza Apartments should contact the Site Office Manager at 724-223-8288.
